Methane detection for gas boiler rooms

A gas-fired boiler room has a fuel supply, burners and hot surfaces in one room. Methane rises, so detectors at the ceiling read in %LEL and close the gas valve on their own relay long before a flammable mixture forms, then report the event over cellular.

Why methane is the hazard here

Fuel and ignition in one room

Pipework, valves and burners share the room with hot surfaces.

Lighter than air

A leak rises and collects under the ceiling.

Unattended plant

Boiler rooms run without staff, so a leak is found by detection or not at all.

How the detection point is specified

Target gasMethane (CH4)
Selectable ranges0-10 / 0-50 / 0-100 %VOL·%LEL
Mounting heightHigh, 0.3 to 0.6 m below the ceiling: the gas is lighter than air
Where the detectors goHigh on the wall above the gas train; near the gas meter and regulator; close to the ceiling, away from extract airflow
OutputsTwo alarm relays, 4-20 mA and RS485 Modbus RTU, all at once
ReportingRS485 into a Genesis controller, then over cellular to alerts and a record

What happens when it alarms

The room acts first

The detector relays switch the fan, close the valve or sound the beacon locally, with no network involved.

Then people are told

The same reading goes over cellular to the people on the alert list, wherever they are, with acknowledgement recorded.

And the event is kept

Concentration, time and duration are kept on a record that exports to Excel, for the incident review and the next inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Should it read in %LEL or %VOL?

For leak detection, %LEL, so the alarm trips long before a flammable mixture forms. The %VOL ranges are for process and biogas measurement.
